Tennis and Life Camps

Tennis and Life

All camps are located on the beautiful campus of Gustavus Adolphus College, overlooking the Minnesota River Valley. There are 20 outdoor courts and six indoor courts on campus, guaranteeing that tennis instruction continues rain or shine. The new Swanson Tennis Center features a 65 foot high ceiling, championship courts, and indirect lighting. Other campus facilities include an indoor pool, spa, sauna, and fitness center. You are housed in a comfortable dormitory room, either single or double. The Gustavus Dining Service prepares nutritious meals.

To us you are more than a tennis player. Yes, we refine your strokes, emphasize strategy, and provide action oriented drills. But we also heighten your confidence, concentration, and motivation. All these areas help you reach the next level of tennis play.

Improving and having fun go together. We encourage you to praise each other's successes with words, smiles and high fives. We are enthusiastic teachers, giving you constant feedback as you master new skills. Humor, laughter, and acting are always present in our teaching.

Principles learned from tennis do apply to school challenges, office tasks, and relationships with family and friends. Learning to focus on controllable elements and to be serene with things outside your influence is valuable wisdom for both tennis and life.

Total Tennis

Our individualized approach to tennis and you includes:

THE INNER YOU: "Why do I choke, or get angry and frustrated with myself? Why do I play so well at times and so poorly at others?" We teach tested methods that improve concentration, relaxation, and confidence.

THE RELATING YOU: "Can I compete hard and be a good sport at the same time? Why do certain people frustrate me? How can I cheer up my doubles partner?" Our approach enhances relationships and tennis simultaneously.

THE THINKING YOU: "Where should I place the ball? Where do I go after I hit it? When should I go to the net?" We teach strategies that are adjusted to various levels of tennis.

THE MECHANICAL YOU: "Why is my backhand so weak? Why does my second serve lack power or spin? How can I get more control on my groundstrokes?" We provide individual lessons from experienced pros with videotape analysis.

THE PHYSICAL YOU: "What is the best way to get in shape for tennis? What do I eat and drink to maintain maximum energy and avoid cramping? How do I prevent pulled muscles, tennis elbow, or lower back problems? We teach conditioning, injury prevention, and nutrition for sports.

 Four Types of Camps

We designed four types of camps to meet your needs. You may come alone or with a group. We match you with three or four players of similar ability for drills stressing strategy patterns and movement. Fifteen ball machines producing both topspin and underspin shots help you groove your strokes, while instructors give you positive and encouraging individual help. Off court sessions include such topics as competitive attitudes, sportsmanship, concentration and relaxation techniques, goal setting, and nutrition. Tennis instructors know your name, eat meals with you, and participate in the non-tennis activities.

JUNIOR CAMP

Beginners (1.5) through advanced players (5.5) from ages eleven through eighteen are welcome. You receive an individual tennis analysis report, a TLC shirt, a camp photograph, performance awards, and a certificate of attendance. Non-tennis highlights include swimming, a variety show, a dance, and other recreational activities. You return to our supervised dormitory by 8:30 p.m. each evening.

ADULT CAMP

Beginners (1.5) through advanced players (5.5) receive intensive tennis training from teachers who adjust their teaching to your present playing and conditioning level. If your muscles get sore, our skilled masseuse Annette Reynolds makes you feel renewed. Many humerous skits teach and entertain you. Both singles and couples enjoy the informal, friendly, first name environment. Highlights include a concert by Columbia Artists performers Neal Hagberg and Leandra Peak.

TOURNAMENT PLAYER CAMP

Advanced players (4.0 to 5.5) who participate in summer USTA tournaments and rank at the top of their school team attend. You are expected to use both topspin and under spin on your groundstrokes, have a reliable spin serve, play serve and volley tennis, and be consistent from the baseline. Supervised singles and doubles matches are offered each day.

FAMILY CAMP

Beginners (1.5) through advanced players (5.5) attend with other family members. You and your family share much time together, but you are divided into groups on the court according to your ability levels. Eight and nine year old children are welcome, if accompanied by an adult. A father may come with his daughter or son, or grandparents may bring their grandchildren. Off court sessions stress family goals, while all games and activities require you to cooperate, communicate, and listen well."
