Shipyard - Hilton Head Island, SC
Tennis rules at Shipyard Plantation, which is nestled between
Forest Beach and Palmetto Dunes Plantation. Most of Shipyard is near or on
the water. Private pathways lead to the beach, and a walk to the Atlantic
Ocean averages about five minutes through the dunes.
Within the 800-acre gated Shipyard Plantation are private
sub-communities of single homes, villas and condos, some with private swimming
pools and tennis courts. The lots vary in size, and many are large for Hilton
Head. Serene and woodsy, they may have lagoon or golf views along the fairways
of Shipyardâs three nine-hole golf courses. Lagoons are
stocked for fishing. Miles of jogging and biking trails connect with the
Hilton Head public pathways that cover the entire island.
The tennis complex was designed by Billie Jean King. It is
now the Van der Meer Shipyard Tennis Resort, named by Tennis Magazine as
one of the "50 Greatest Tennis Resorts in America." With 20 mostly
clay courts, the resort offers tennis clinics and private lessons for adults
and young people, plus special sessions for tennis teachers, high school
and college coaches. Eight of the courts are lighted, including three that
are indoors and lighted. Players enjoy shaded pavilions and refrigerated
water fountains.
.A Crowne Plaza Hotel and a beach club attract vacationers,
and Shipyard residents often rent out their homes part of the year.
