Phil Green came along in 1991 to establish his tennis academy
while also offering spa guests a mixture of daily clinics, game matching,
and social round robins. The tennis complex consists of 7 Har-Tru courts
and 2 evidently little used hard courts. The pro shop is on the second level
of a clubhouse (down below are offices and storage), with wooden deck around
three sides overlooking the main bank of courts and Tampa Bay.
Tennis Staff
Born and raised in Queensland, Australia, Green trained
with and played for the legendary Harry Hopman in the 1960s (see Hopman Tennis
School) and later coached Judy Dalton the year she reached the finals of
Wimbledon. His staff consists of two other former touring pros, Terry Addison
and James Shephard. During the FILA Tennis Weeks, they're joined by Martin
Mulligan, who ranked as high as No. 3 in the world and reached the finals
at Wimbledon.
Tennis Programs.
"We try to make everything simple," notes Green.
He and his staff teach everyone from absolute beginners to touring professionals.
They're also the sort who often fill in if someone needs a fourth for doubles.
Courts & Fees
The 9 hard and clay courts (none with lights) overlook
Tampa Bay. Court fees: $12/hour but included on tennis packages.
