Stanfords eleven-court intercollegiate tennis facility was
built in 1926. It provided grandstand seating for viewing of three stadium
courts for approximately 600 spectators. These stands were in need of replacement
and prompted a drive to renovate the entire facility.
The Ralph Rodriguez Clubhouse, built in 1983, became the
cornerstone of the facility upgrade. It provides meeting rooms and coaching
staff office space. It also houses the Orsak Family Heritage Room, featuring
one of the most impressive displays of collegiate success in any sport in
the nation. The Initial Stadium Improvement: In 1989, the old bleacher-type
seating was demolished and a beautiful 1160 individual seat stadium was erected
using the Ralph Rodriguez Clubhouse as its center. This structure contains
mens and womens team locker rooms, additional office space, and
an indoor practice range, formally named The Ralph Rodriguez Founders
Room.
The Craig R. Johnson Players Lounge is a popular team
gathering place and study area. It was donated by the former 1976 standout
and his family.
In 1996, The Russ and Jackie Thompson Video Center was added,
courtesy of Jackie Thompson in memory of her late husband who was a great
friend of Stanford tennis. This trend setting video center collects data
directly into a computer for instantaneous recall by category. This enables
a player or coach to call up any part of the match for video analysis and
review.
The Stadium Today: Thanks to the lead generosity of Tad and
Dianne Taube, as well as over 600 other former players and supporters, The
Taube Family Tennis Stadium was completed in the spring of 1997. It now features
2500 individual seats, a championship Plexicushion indoor and substantial
office space. The Koret and Fluegel Family Conference Rooms are an important
component of the building and are serviced by a kitchenette, restrooms and
substantial storage space.
In 1999, the Phil and Penny Knight Scoreboard was erected
allowing for live updated scoring for all eleven courts for the stadium and
the internet.
Recent changes to the Taube Tennis Center include the Victor
and Gwen Riches Family Tutorial Rooms, home of the East Palo Alto Tennis
and Tutoring Program, lighting for all eleven courts, and the Bill and Dixie
Gates Heritage Plaza.
