Mt. Washington Resort at Bretton Woods

While The Mount Washington Resort at Bretton Woods has been offering guests a wide variety of recreational diversions since 1902, it wasn't until 1973 that the sport of tennis put Bretton Woods on the map. The Mount Washington Hotel's red-clay stadium court, ringed by 18,000 spectacular acres of White Mountain National Forest, was the perfect setting for the Volvo International Tennis Tournament. Twenty thousand fans gathered to witness the first tournament, as an Indian youth of nineteen named Vijay Amritraj defeated another nineteen year old, Jimmy Connors. Other tennis greats who have graced the courts of Bretton Woods include Ron Laver, Roy Emerson, Arthur Ashe, Fred Stolle and Bobby Riggs.

Although the Volvo International took place at Bretton Woods for only two years, the Resort continues its reputation as a major tennis center, and was recently named one of the four best family tennis resorts in the country by Tennis Magazine. The Resort offers a dozen red-clay courts and a variety of lodging packages. The full-service Pro Shop offers round robins, clinics and private lessons. Custom-designed individual programs are also available.

Renowned for hosting the first Volvo International Tennis Tournament in 1973, The Mount Washington Resort at Bretton Woods has become a perennial favorite with the tennis fraternity. A dozen red clay courts welcome players of every age and ability to compete on the same courts once graced by Jimmy Connors, Arthur Ashe and other tennis greats. Now it's your chance to learn or return that big serve from many of the greatest names in tennis!
