Half Moon P.O.
Rose Hall, Montego Bay, Jamaica W.I.
In 1954, a group of wealthy individuals including Donald
Deskey, designer of Radio City Music Hall; Harvey Firestone, Jr. of The Firestone
Tire and Rubber Company; Richard Reynolds of the Reynolds Metal Company and
Jamaican Bauxite Company; oil and real estate entrepreneur Curtis Steuart
and Mrs. Laurence Armour of U.S. meat packaging giant Armour Packing Company,
chose to build an exclusive vacation resort on a perfectly shaped crescent
beach, that they aptly named "Half Moon." That same year Half Moon
Golf, Tennis & Beach Club officially opened with seventeen whitewashed
cottages overlooking Half Moon Bay, and 30 beachfront homes.
As it still does, the Resort attracted many luminaries of
the day including Joan Crawford and her husband Alfred Steel (CEO of Pepsi-Cola),
Clark Gable and HRH Princes Margaret. Other notable guests include HRH Queen
Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, and HRH the Prince of Wales; John F. and Jacqueline
Kennedy, Prince Rainer of Monaco; and George H. W. Bush, when he was Vice
President.
Although the cottages were passed down from generation to
generation, three descendants of the original investors, Curtis Steuart,
Bill Weiss Sr., and Howard Pearce have shaped the property into what it is
today, the Caribbeans most complete resort.
Over the years, Half Moon has undergone several renovations
and additions, most recently, the multi-million dollar demolition and rebuilding
of its 50-year-old beachfront rooms. Today, Half Moon stretches across 400
lushly landscaped acres, with 34 stately three- to seven-bedroom villas,
each with its own personal staff and pool, 163 luxurious suites, and 51 breathtaking
rooms. Eleven of the original cottages remain today, a tribute to the legacy
of the founders, whose descendants remain as resort shareholders.
Half Moon features a championship, 72-par Robert Trent Jones,
Sr. golf course, the David Leadbetter Golf Academy, and 18-hole putting green,
13 tennis courts, a full range of water sports, an exclusive natural Dolphin
Lagoon, four gourmet restaurants and over half a dozen informal snack bars,
a world class spa and shopping village.
Superbly manicured, our 13 tennis courts, all lit for nighttime
play, are a dream to play on, no matter what level. Our experienced and certified
tennis professionals offer clinics, private lessons and summer camps for
all levels and ages. Four international squash courts and squash equipment
are also available for guests at Half Moon.
Lessons can be scheduled with the Head Pro, Lynval Grizzle
(Kirby), the Assistant Head Pro, Troy Gichie, the Assistant Pro Christopher
Haynes or any of our qualified Junior Pros.
