Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is the Midwest's largest full service, year-round resort and conference center. We believe that anything is possible and will create grand experiences for our guests, our members and ourselves. We hold the local community in high standing and will maintain a positive stewardship of our environment.

Situated on 900 acres in the northwest corner of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula along the shores of Lake Michigan’s East Grand Traverse Bay, the resort is located six miles northeast of Traverse City, MI and ten minutes from Traverse City’s Cherry Capital Airport. The Grand Traverse area has grown to become the largest producer of sweet and tart cherries in the world, and is home to several award winning wineries.

Well respected in the travel industry, Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is ranked in the top 20 mainland resorts and top 50 travel destinations and services worldwide by Conde Nast Traveler. Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is one of the Midwest’s largest full service, year-round resort and conference destinations offering 660 luxurious accommodations, 49,000 square feet of dedicated meeting space, and 54 holes of championship golf including Jack Nicklaus’s signature course, The Bear, Gary Player’s The Wolverine, and William Newcomb’s Spruce Run.

Additional features of the resort include a variety of recreation offerings, including: five indoor and four outdoor tennis courts, two indoor and two outdoor swimming pools, a beach club, an upscale shopping gallery with a salon and spa, diverse restaurants and lounges, and live entertainment nightly. The Club at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa offers a limited number of memberships.

Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is a recognized tennis leader with excellence in staff programs, and facilities. The Resort was named a Top 50 Tennis Resort by Tennis Magazine in 2000 and again in 2002. The junior tennis program ranked third in the nation in 2000.

The Club at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is Northwestern Michigan's premier golf, tennis, fitness and social club. The Resort’s tennis instruction, leagues, and tournament programs, which serve over 200 adult men and women, and nearly 100 junior boys and girls, who are members of The Club, plus Resort guests. The Resort has a six person tennis staff that includes four USPTA certified teaching professionals and two tennis instructors. Erin Crandall is the Head Tennis Professional.

The Club at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa conducts tennis programs year-round thanks to facilities that include five indoor and four outdoor tennis courts surfaced with Deco-Turf II, the same surface at the U.S. Tennis Center and Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., site of the annual United States Open Tennis Championships.

Tennis Pro of the Year

Most recently, Christopher “Mick” Michalowski, Director of Tennis was chosen from among 300 tennis professionals in the state as the 2004 Michigan Tennis Professional of the Year by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA).

Michalowski, the Resort’s Director of Tennis since 1988, attended Ferris State University (FSU) where he majored in Marketing/Professional Tennis Management and was named the 1988 Professional Tennis Management Student of the Year.

During the summers of 1990 through 1994, Michalowski also was the Director of Tennis at the Country Club of Detroit, in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. In 1995, he was named USPTA Midwest Tester of the Year, administering the USPTA test in the Midwest to players interested in becoming certified teaching professionals. He has hosted many workshops and serves as a member of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) High Performance Task Force (2003-2004).
