 Located in the Santa Ynez Valley, Alisal lies 35 miles northwest of Santa Barbara, in the horse and wine country just outside the Danish community of Solvang. Long a low-profile retreat for Hollywood elite—Clark Gable and Lady Silvia were married there—it has evolved into a 10,000-acre spread containing 7 tennis courts, two 18-hole golf courses, a spring-fed lake, and miles of horseback riding trails. It also offers a solid children's program during the summer for kids ages 3 to 17.
Rates. The ranch has 73 studios and suites all with wood-burning
fireplaces and refrigerators but none with a telephone or television. Rates
include breakfast and dinner. There is a two-night minimum.
